How I Shortened Leggings

Although Widget is not in school, I still have the need to replace her wardrobe about this time of year due to pesky summer growth spurts. However, the clothing options on the sale racks do not always match the current season. Like this pair of white leggings I picked up at the Gap Kids Outlet. I think the pants were marked around $4 plus an extra 40% off...so pretty cheap. But since we live in a warm climate at the moment (Puerto Rico winters are only supposed to reach a low of 65-70 degrees I think), I knew Widget would not use long pants as often as capris.
So I grabbed a marking pen, some 1/4" elastic, and sat down at my sewing machine. I used the existing side seam and marked where another 'side seam would have been' on the outside of the pant leg (so I could 'scrunch' both sides of the pant hem). Then I started at the top of the line and sewed the elastic to the pant fabric, stretching out the elastic as I sewed so the hem would scrunch when done. I sewed four pieces of elastic total to the pant hem (one on each inside seam and one each outside of pant leg).

You could do this to a pair of leggings your daughter outgrew (in length) and make them last another season, or give new life to a well loved item in her wardrobe :)

And here are the leggings in action...literally. Sorry the pictures are a little blurry, they are phone pics taken at the mall (not the best lighting, and the subject was antsy). The leggings are still a little big, so they sit on Widget closer to the ankle than to her knee...but it just means they will last that much longer through fall and winter growth spurts, right???

Have you altered any clothing for back to school? Old clothing made new or some awesome clearance finds?Good luck with your back to school events this week (and next).
